All the iPods except the iPod shuffle have 5 buttons which are all integrated into the click wheel.

The buttons are used to perform the basic functions such as play, move to next or previous track, and stop a track from playing.

The buttons also perform functions such as scrolling through menu items as well as controlling the volume and all these functions being done buy using the wheels rotational ability.

The iPod shuffle has 5 buttons and these are positioned in a different manner from the larger models, the iPod touch on the other hand does not have any buttons but instead relies on the multi-touch input style similar to the one used by iPhone.

The iPod gadgets can play several audio formats some of which include, MP3, Protected AAC, AIFF, WAV, Audible audiobook and Apple Lossless. The iPod's are also able to display photos in the following image file formats: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNG. In addition the newer generations of iPod's are also able to play MPEG-4(H.264/ MPEG-4 AVC) with Quick Time video formats though with restrictions on video dimensions, encoding techniques and data rates. iPod software only worked with Mac operating systems but today iPod software for Microsoft Windows has been launched with the second generation models of iPods. Apple does not support Microsoft's WMA audio format but you can however get a digital converter from windows version of iTunes.

MIDI files will also not play but can also be converted to playable file formats on the iPod using the menu in iTunes. There are also some custom firmwares like Rockbox that can be installed onto your iPod that will allow you to play some audio files like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC.

When installing software to your iPod you connect it to a host computer and iTunes synchronize the entire music library or playlists automatically or manually. iTunes will also automatically rate songs for you or you can rate set the ratings yourself. When connected to the computer you can access the songs on the iPod and even play them and add music on a second computer only when the iPod is set to manual sync.

Edited music will be reversed when you connect back to the main computer when on automatic sync, if you do this you have to be careful for if there is any music you needed on the iPod it will be wiped and replaced by the computers library.
